I am a researcher, writer and editor working on Iraq and on the politics and culture of the wider Middle East. I am the Contributing Iraq Editor at Amwaj.media, where I work with journalists, researchers and analysts from across the region on coverage of Iraq.

I hold a PhD in Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies from New York University and an MPhil in Modern Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Oxford. My academic work centres on a book project drawn from my doctoral dissertation, Martyred Citizenship: Law, Culture, and Sacrifice in Iraq, which examines how cultures of sacrifice and martyrdom shape social services and reparations for victims of political violence. It is based on several years of ethnographic fieldwork in Iraq and the region, and it follows the entangled ethics, histories and politics of international law, victimhood and sacrifice.
